The Look: Mid-Century Modern

History has a way of repeating itself—in home décor as well as many other fields. We are currently seeing a reinvention of an era that holds fond memories for many homeowners—the 1930s to 1960s. “Mid-century modern,” is represented by functionality, sleek lines, minimal ornamentation, and mixed materials in both traditional and non-traditional elements.
During and following World War II, many German designers migrated to American, bringing with them Bauhaus styling, a vision of bridging the gap between art and industry by combining crafts with fine arts. Greatly influenced by American technology, industry, and economics, they embraced a fresh energy for growth. The resulting design style emphasized comfort and simplicity.
American designers like Herman Miller, Charles and Ray Eames, Harry Bertoia, and Eero Saarinen brought us furniture classics we are now enhancing with fresher materials and unique implementations that improve upon these timeless designs. Combinations of hammered metals; an influx of gold and copper tones paired with silvers; Plexiglas plus glittery metallics; and thick, shaggy textures amidst softer velvets and chenilles add depth and interest in a way their predecessors would never have expected.
You can furnish your Mid-century modern room with authentic pieces or take advantage of the adaptations and copies that are available to fit any budget. Another option is to search out vintage furniture. Avoid too many patterns and stay within a color range, particularly with wood. However you go about achieving it, remember that the Mid-century modern look is timeless and will serve you well for years to come.
